Pancakes are more than a wholesome breakfast; they’re a tradition. Millions of people enjoy pancakes every other morning, especially on the weekends, as a tall pile of these pillowy disks keeps everyone satisfied.

The problem with pancakes, though, is that they contain milk, and not everyone can handle dairy. Besides, all-purpose flour, AKA white flour, is not particularly healthy — especially if you want to lose a few pounds!

So, is there such a thing as healthy pancakes? You’ll find a recipe for healthier pancakes below. One that uses almond milk instead of regular milk and whole wheat flour instead of the pale all-purpose flour.

Other than that, making these pancakes is as easy as making regular pancakes. No more pancakes from a box; let’s make them from scratch — don’t you feel healthier already?

Why Make Healthy Pancakes?

There are many ways of making healthier pancakes. For starters, wholewheat flour gives dietary fiber to the breakfast staple while making it a bit harder to digest — therefore less caloric.

You can also eliminate the milk and butter by using almond milk and margarine. This means the recipe below is perfect if you are looking for vegan pancakes!

You can always amp up your pancakes with superfoods, such as blueberries or matcha green tea, to make them even healthier, but that’s entirely up to you. Pancakes shouldn’t be considered unhealthy, but we’ve been eating them wrong for decades! Let’s make pancakes healthy again and make them compatible with a healthier lifestyle.

Finally, there’s no use in making healthier pancakes if we’re drizzling them with honey or maple syrup, basically liquid sugar. Consider using agave syrup or a non-caloric sweetener to ensure your work is worthwhile.

What Goes into Healthy Pancakes?

To make healthy pancakes, you’ll need whole wheat flour, which is darker and grainier and more nutritious. You’ll also need baking powder and a pinch of salt.

The most exciting ingredient, though, is the milk alternative. Use low-fat cow’s milk if you want, but almond milk, oat milk and even soy milk are lovely alternatives, and they’re generally better for you than whole milk.

You’ll need a tablespoon of margarine to grease the pan, although applesauce also works. Finally, drizzle your favorite sweetener over your pancakes or garnish them with fruit and voilá.
